Ait Bou Ichaouen Carpet
Ait Bou Ichaouen Carpet
An unusual and large vintage carpet from the Ait Bou Ichaouen tribe and originally woven as a family sleeping rug. The hatched symmetrical ladder motifs are formed into lozenges within which are embedded Berber cross motifs. The deep blood red maroon palette is combined with and bordered by black. Woven in all pure hand-spun wool, with a neat hand-trimmed pile, the carpet is finished with large areas of flatweave bands at both ends. With some restoration and nibbling into the fringe as found. The Ait Bou Ichaouen inhabit one of the most isolated regions of Morocco - the far eastern reaches of the High Atlas Mountains, where they meet the Sahara. Their rugs are marked by their use of strong seemingly complex graphics and bold colours
