A monumental, historic and highly collectible Berber carpet from the northern Middle Atlas mountains, with some of the highest elevation in Morocco so the rugs are thick and heavy against the cold. Its size and magnificent, intricate design indicate it was woven for or by a wealthy Berber family. Densely woven, its 100% pure wool pile is in wonderful condition and the composition is based on fine variations of lozenges, a traditional female symbol, contained by wide borders. At some time in its life, the saturated orange colour has run throughout the rug. Washed and restored, this run of deep tangerine now blends into the overall look of the piece and enhances its vintage character. This glorious carpet has touches that we rarely see - delicate bands of flatweave at each end. In great condition for its age, there are a number of clearly visible repairs along with some fraying in the fringes that has been left as we found it
